La Fabrique Concert Hall
by TETRARC
NANTES – In France a concert hall and recording centre is a modern reflection of the site’s industrial history.
The centre is located in a former warehouse on the 'île de Nantes,' near an old shipyard site that’s being redeveloped into a cultural hub with public gardens.
TETRARC looked to the land’s industrial history and artisan techniques previously used to build ships, and reflected these aspects in the design. A massive, geometric metallic structure appears to have nestled itself into the site, like a landed spaceship. In total, the technical structure spans 6800-sq-m within a shiny silver shell.
The project is divided into three elements; the first section houses a 400-seat theatre with offices on top of it, plus a 1200-seat theatre. A public hall connects this section and the recording studios, which are in a volume suspended above a war bunker that was never demolished. Photos courtesy of S. Chalmeau
